About the tour
This self-guided driving tour carries you across the Isle of Skye’s coasts and high ridges, weaving together history, geology, and local lore while the GPS audio points out viewpoints, hikes, parking, and other useful landmarks—fully offline.
This loop around the Isle of Skye covers more than 200 miles, and there’s plenty to see and do along the way. To see everything, you should budget at least two full days—though you can always plan for more if you want to spend more time exploring!
Along the way, you’ll see dramatic mountains rise above the moors and pastures, with streams and waterfalls creating scenery that looks like it came straight from a fairytale. You’ll hear the stories of the vikings, clan warriors, crofters, missionaries, and Jacobite rebels who all left their own unique marks on the landscape and folklore of Skye.
On the Sleat Peninsula, you’ll tour the museum and gardens of Armandale Castle and hear legends of mythical warrior maidens and clan feuds alike. On the north of the island, you will see the fantastic scenery of the Quiraing, its otherworldly landscape created by the largest prehistoric landslip in Great Britain’s history. Stop by An Corran Beach at low tide to hunt for Jurassic-era dinosaur footprints, then see some of the modern animals of Skye on the many walking paths along crofters’ sheep pastures.
On the western side of the island, you will visit Dunvegan Castle, home of the famous Fairy Flag, and maybe spot some families of seals, dolphins, or whales playing off the coast.
