There are so many places to visit in Yoho National Park that it can be difficult to squeeze them all into one day. However, you can certainly fit the highlights into a single day trip if you plan your itinerary carefully. Here are some suggestions:
Takkakaw Falls
If you only have time to visit one place in Yoho National Park, Takkakaw Falls is a solid choice. The tallest waterfall in the park—and the second-tallest in all of Canada—Takkakaw Falls is named after the Cree word for “magnificent” and certainly lives up to its moniker. It also happens to be only a few minutes from the parking lot, so it’s easy to access.
Emerald Lake
Emerald Lake is perhaps the most famous gem in Yoho’s crown—a placid freshwater lake with gorgeous emerald-green water. The Emerald Lake Loop Trail runs all the way around the water and we highly recommend taking a stroll along it so you can see every angle.
Sherbrooke Lake
It’s a bit of a hike to get out to Sherbrooke Lake, so make sure you arrive at the park early if you want to see one of Yoho National Park’s more well-kept secrets. Every bit as scenic as Emerald Lake, Sherbrooke has the added benefit of a more remote location with smaller crowds. If you’re spending at least two days in the park, we also recommend following your hike to Sherbrooke Lake with a longer hike up to nearby Paget Peak.
Wapta Falls
Although Wapta isn’t nearly as tall as Takkakaw, it’s still one of the most popular sites in the park. The hike leading to Wapta Falls is easy and beautiful, and the falls themselves are picturesque. Wapta Falls is just as lovely during the winter as in the summer, but be careful if you visit when the water is frozen over – it’s not uncommon for tourists to slip or fall through the ice when climbing on it.
