About the Tour
Your Space Needle tour begins at the Museum of Pop Culture.
From there, your journey takes you to the majestic Space Needle, a prominent symbol of the 1962 World’s Fair. Here, you’ll hear the story of how the city sought a memorable centerpiece for fairgoers and the struggle to find a place to build it! Next, you’ll come to the Chihuly Garden and Glass, featuring many glass sculptures that emulate the natural world. You’ll also uncover the story behind Chihuly’s unique processes in creating these works.
As you keep walking, you’ll see the Sonic Bloom, solar-powered floral sculptures that produce harmonic tones as you get close! Then see the Pacific Science Center, built for the World’s Fair. You’ll hear the tale of some fugitive monkeys as well! On a tamer note, you’ll head onto the Neototems Children’s Garden. Learn how many Native Americans saw whales as symbols of good luck, while observing the whimsical sculptures around you.
Your journey next takes you to the Mural Amphitheatre. Learn about the artist Paul Horiuchi, responsible for the mural before you. Step back in time and hear about the many struggles he experienced.
Then move past the Seattle Center and onto the International Fountain, another remnant from the World’s Fair. You’ll hear how it’s changed since, including the fact that it once had a jagged surface like the moon! If you’re lucky, you might even take in a water show, synced to diverse music like Beethoven and Northwestern bands.
Up next is another original structure from the fair, the Climate Pledge Arena. You’ll hear how the arena once housed the “World of Tomorrow” exhibit, complete with projected images of an imagined future! Head onto the Kobe Bell Meditation Garden and uncover the bonds between Seattle and Kobe, Japan, forged after World War II. You’ll also see the great bell, given by Kobe as a gesture of peace and friendship.
Your journey will take a few twists. Laugh at the April Fool’s prank involving the very fake collapse of the Space Needle. Become spellbound by the base jumpers who once leapt from the Space Needle’s observation platform, but with a few frightening twists!
Your walking tour ends at the Artists at Play Playground, designed around themes of sound and motion.
