About the Tour

This self-guided Great Ocean Road tour takes you on an unforgettable coastal drive packed with shipwreck legends, rainforests, ocean views, and native wildlife encounters.
Kick things off at the iconic 12 Apostles, where towering limestone stacks rise from crashing waves. Then follow the shoreline to the dramatic Bay of Islands and Bay of Martyrs. At the Grotto, peer through a natural rock arch to see an ocean pool below. London Arch and The Arch showcase how wind and sea have sculpted the cliffs into stunning formations.
Cruise into Port Campbell, a laid-back seaside town, before continuing to Loch Ard Gorge, where a tragic shipwreck tale gives the site its name. Stop at Gibson Steps to descend to the beach and take in the towering cliffs from sea level. As the road veers inland, pass through Princetown and into the cool, mossy rainforest of Melba Gully.
Lavers Hill offers views across the Otways, followed by a stop at Castle Cove Lookout with its sweeping ocean panoramas. At Cape Otway, leave the main road to visit one of Australia’s oldest lighthouses, built in 1848 to guide ships along this wild coast. Continue to Maits Rest, where a short boardwalk trail winds through ancient ferns and towering trees.
In Apollo Bay, enjoy the mix of beach vibes and forest views, then drive up to Marriners Lookout for panoramic coastal scenery. Pass through Skenes Creek and pause at Carisbrook Waterfall before heading toward Cape Patton Lookout for one of the best views along the route.
Kennett River is a prime spot to see koalas dozing in eucalyptus trees, while Wye River offers peaceful coastal charm. Artillery Rocks and Mount Defiance deliver clifftop views and stories from the road’s construction. Arrive in Lorne, home to Erskine Falls—a hidden forest gem cascading into a fern-lined gully.
From here, the road twists past Big Hill and Cinema Point before arriving at the Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch, a monument to the WWI veterans who built the route. Aireys Inlet follows, with its dramatic cliffs and Split Point Lighthouse—a local landmark and Aussie TV icon.
In Anglesea, spot kangaroos grazing on the golf course greens, then stop at the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie for a sweet break. Detour to Point Addis for epic ocean views, then cruise through Bells Beach, Australia’s surfing capital. Learn about wave culture at the Australian National Surfing Museum.
