About the Tour
Your journey begins at the Clingmans Dome Visitor Contact Station, where you’ll gain insight into the Great Smoky Mountains’ rich history and diverse ecosystem. This stop offers a wealth of information about the surrounding flora and fauna and the area’s cultural significance to the Cherokee people. You’ll hear stories of early settlers and the mountain’s role in the region’s development. Don’t miss the exhibits that detail the incredible biodiversity that thrives in this unique environment, making it a true gem of the Appalachian range.
As you move along, you’ll ascend to the summit of Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the state of Tennessee. The steep but rewarding hike takes you through a beautiful spruce-fir forest, an ecosystem typically found much farther north. As you approach the top, the landscape reveals sweeping, panoramic views stretching for miles. On a clear day, you can see into seven states from this vantage point.
At the summit, you’ll find the iconic Clingmans Dome Observation Tower, a concrete spiral that rises above the treetops. Learn about the history of the tower’s construction in the 1950s as part of the National Park Service’s Mission 66 initiative and how it has become a symbol of the park’s efforts to preserve natural beauty while providing access to visitors.
The final leg of your tour leads you to Kuwahi, a place of deep cultural and spiritual importance to the Cherokee people. This site, also known as “Mulberry Place,” is steeped in stories and legends passed down through generations. Here, you’ll delve into the Cherokee’s historical connection to these mountains, learning about their traditions, beliefs, and the significance of this land. Kuwahi offers a quieter, more reflective experience, contrasting with the grandeur of the summit, allowing you to appreciate the spiritual connection between the Cherokee and these ancient mountains.
