“Some towns whisper history.
Newport prefers to parade it in marble.”
Newport looks like a peaceful seaside escape, but drive a little and you start to see the town that once defined American wealth. Gilded Age mansions rise like palaces above the Atlantic. Sailboats cut across the harbor that shaped presidents, tennis champions, and fortunes. And tucked between the glamour are quiet coves, windswept cliffs, and traces of a small New England town that existed long before the golden years.
This self-guided Newport driving tour brings all of it into focus at your pace. With the audio doing the storytelling, Bellevue Avenue becomes more than a scenic road. It becomes a front-row seat to the rise of the country’s wealthiest families, their bold architecture, and their surprisingly dramatic personal histories. Ocean Drive opens up sweeping views where breakers crash against rocky shores, with stories linking each curve of the coastline to the people who shaped it.
Along the way, you pass icons of the Gilded Age, from ornate summer “cottages” like The Breakers, Marble House, The Elms, Rosecliff, and Chepstow to earlier landmarks like the Edward King House and Kingscote. The route highlights cultural gems like the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the Audrain Auto Museum, both reminders that Newport has always had a taste for sport, speed, and spectacle. Ocean views unfold around places like Brenton Point State Park, Hammersmith Farm, and historic sites connected to naval history, political families, and the personalities who once summered here.
Scenic turns introduce you to forts, lighthouses, rocky inlets, and neighborhoods shaped by sailors, immigrants, and generations of Rhode Islanders. Newport may shine with opulence, but it also carries stories of craftsmanship, storms, tradition, and the ocean that still defines it.
Possible side effects of this drive
