Like most parks, Yoho National Park has an abundance of native wildlife that you can try to catch a glimpse of during your trip. Here are a few in particular that you should keep an eye out for, especially if you brought your camera.
Bears
There are two species of bears that live in the Canadian Rockies: black bears and grizzly bears. The former is the most common species and can be found throughout Yoho National Park, while the latter is much more rare. If you do see a bear, try to keep your distance and don’t give it any food, but be sure to snap a few photos before you go.
Moose
There are several deer species you might see in Yoho National Park, but moose are by far the most iconic. These majestic animals are prominent symbols of Canadian pride and culture and roam the wilderness alone except when raising their calves. Like grizzly bears, moose are huge and more than capable of injuring or killing a human being, so stay at a safe distance if you spot one.
Hoary Marmots
Significantly smaller than bears or moose but no less interesting, marmots are members of the squirrel family and can be found in the high-altitude alpine areas in the park. Hoary marmots are relatively calm around people and will often sit still for photographs, making them popular among hikers.
Wolverines
The largest members of the weasel family, wolverines, are rarely seen in the park, so count yourself lucky if you spot one. Despite their wild reputation, wolverines are very shy and don’t spend much time near populated areas like hiking trails, but they have been seen deep in the park.
