La Jolla is a very walkable part of San Diego and features plenty of hikes and beach trails for tourists who would prefer not to drive everywhere. For the most part, you can get just about anywhere in La Jolla by walking a mile or less, making it the perfect city to explore on foot. There are relatively few hills in the area as well, so it’s a pretty easy stroll no matter where you’re headed. Just make sure you bring comfortable shoes and plenty of sunscreen, especially if you’re visiting in the summer – the sun shines brightly in southern California and La Jolla is no exception.
La Jolla is also exceptionally bike-friendly, so you can rent a bicycle and get around a little more quickly. Cyclists from all over San Diego come to this neighborhood for its easy, scenic rides, and there are plenty of bike paths that lead along the beach for gorgeous views of the ocean. There are even certain views, like the ones along La Jolla Hermosa Blvd, that you can only see by taking the bike paths, so we highly recommend taking these routes if you enjoy cycling.
If you do decide to drive on your trip to La Jolla, make sure to stay alert. For the most part, the neighborhood prefers stop signs to stoplights, so you’ll have to be aware. Add a ton of pedestrians and other tourists to the mix, and it’s easy to see why most people prefer to travel on foot when in La Jolla. Driving in southern California is never a relaxing experience, unfortunately, so if you’re taking a trip around the whole area you should probably be prepared to get your Mad Max on.
