Body: The La Sal mountain range is absolutely gorgeous, so we think it’s worth visiting just to see the scenic vistas from the peaks. However, the mountain range also features plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreational activities that make it well worth the trip, especially if you’re in the Moab area already.
If you only have a few hours to explore the La Sal mountains, we recommend checking out the La Sal Mountains Loop Road, a scenic drive that takes you through the peaks and leaves you back near Moab after about two or three hours. There are plenty of overlooks where you can stop and take pictures or just drink in the incredible natural beauty of the area. If you have a little more time and you want to explore the mountains properly, there are a ton of trails fit for hikers of any experience level. Some of our favorites include the Oowah Lake Trail, the Geyser Pass Trail, and the Warner Lake Trail. There are also a ton of mountain bike trails if you want to be a little more adventurous.
The La Sal mountains are home to a wide variety of plants and animals, including deer, elk, black bears, and plenty of birds. The area’s natural beauty and diversity make it a popular spot for photographers who come from all over to capture pictures of the local wildlife. There are also plenty of streams and lakes perfect for fishing, mostly filled with trout.
In the winter, La Sal transforms into an alpine wonderland complete with snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Make sure you bundle up since the peaks of the mountains get plenty of snow each year.
