No St. Augustine tour would be complete without a trip down St. George Street, the city’s main tourist thoroughfare. Once the main route through the city center, St. George Street is now home to historic buildings, primo restaurants, and charming shopping destinations. We highly recommend visiting this part of the city to get a taste of everything St. Augustine is famous for, from seafood to colonial-era Spanish architecture.
St. George Street runs through the city’s Historic District and passes by some of the oldest buildings in St. Augustine. Make sure you stop by the Oldest House Museum, the earliest surviving Spanish building in Florida. Built in the 18th century, the Oldest House also features a museum dedicated to the area’s surfing culture. A little further down, don’t miss the serene Mission of Nombre de Dios, the first Spanish mission in the Americas. There are also a ton of great museums on or near St. George, including the Shipwreck Museum, Governor’s House, and Pirate & Treasure Museum.
The Historic District features much more than old buildings, of course. It’s also home to some of the best restaurants in St. Augustine. There’s plenty of Spanish and Caribbean cuisine, of course, but we also recommend stopping at Gaufre’s & Goods for some authentic Polish food. If you step off St. George onto San Marco Avenue, you can also find great restaurants like the Carrera Wine Cellar and Raintree Restaurant. Finally, pick up some souvenirs for your kitchen at home when you visit the Spice and Tea Exchange, featuring a mix of traditional and gourmet spices, seasonings, and teas from all over the world.
