Welcome to the Theodore Roosevelt Tour
“I never would have been President if it had not been for my experience in North Dakota.”
That’s what Teddy Roosevelt said about this place. And once you see it, you’ll understand why.
Back in the 1880s, a young Roosevelt came here seeking solitude after a personal tragedy. Instead, he found a rugged, untamed landscape that sparked a lifelong passion for conservation. Bison roamed freely. Sunsets painted the sky in impossible colors. And deep, silent canyons carved through ancient rock. This wasn’t just the West. This was the West: raw, real, unforgettable.
Today, the same wild beauty still thrives. That’s what makes Theodore Roosevelt National Park such a rare gem. It’s a place where history, geology, wildlife, and memory all coexist side by side.
With this self-guided audio tour, you’ll explore the South Unit of the park at your own pace. As you drive, stories unfold- of Roosevelt’s time here, of boat thieves and badlands, prairie dogs and bison, and the dream that helped create the National Park system.
Along the way, you’ll stop at the humble Maltese Cross Cabin, once Roosevelt’s home on the frontier. Watch prairie dogs pop up and chirp across the aptly named Prairie Dog Metropolis. Snap photos at Skyline Vista and Boicourt Overlook, where the badlands stretch as far as the eye can see. Hike through scorched earth at the Coal Vein Trail. And if you’re lucky, spot bighorn sheep near the river bends.
There’s history at every turn. Even bonus stops in the North Unit for the intrepid traveler.
Disclaimer: This tour won’t turn you into a Rough Rider, but it might just turn you into a conservationist.
