There are plenty of things to do in Newport, RI, but our personal favorite is taking a tour of the famous Newport mansions. Originally built by some of the wealthiest and most powerful people in the country, these Gilded Age relics are usually open to the public and offer a little peek into the lifestyles of the bluest of blood. Who knows, if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the current residents, including actor Nicolas Cage, comedian Jay Leno, and pop megastar Taylor Swift, who frequently holds secret album listening parties at her colonial-style abode.
If the rich and famous aren’t really your scene, you can always check out one of Newport’s famous cliff walks. Take a leisurely stroll on the cliffs overlooking the crashing waves below and witness some of the most beautiful views of the ocean this side of the Atlantic. You can even compromise: some of the cliff walks will take you right through the swankiest neighborhood on the island. With the ocean on one side and the carefully-curated Gilded Age estates on the other, there’s a little something for every member of your family. Finally, if you’re more of a history buff, you can always check out Fort Adams, the Touro Synagogue, or any of the other historical landmarks in Newport. From its colonial roots as a shipping port to its years as a summer destination for New York aristocracy, Newport’s history is as vibrant as any city on the east coast.
