While most people visit Big Sky in the winter so they can ski on Lone Mountain, the town is just as gorgeous in the summertime. In fact, visiting during the summer can be a lot nicer as the melting snow opens up a ton of great places to hike and experience nature. You’ll also be avoiding the bitterly cold Montana winter, which can be a bit too much for some people to handle. Here are a few tips on making the most of your summer vacation in Big Sky:
Visit Yellowstone National Park: Yellowstone is one of the most famous and popular national parks in the US for a reason, and you absolutely shouldn’t leave Montana without first checking it out. The park’s western border is only about 20 minutes from the town of Big Sky, so you don’t even have to drive too far.
Go Hiking: There’s a wide range of parks and national forests in the area surrounding Big Sky, each of which has countless beautiful hiking trails. Montana has some of the most awe-inspiring natural scenery in the world, so even a quick walk through the woods can turn into an almost religious experience.
Gaze at the Stars: As its name suggests, Big Sky is one of the best places in the world for stargazing, and it’s even nicer in the summer when the temperature doesn’t drop below freezing every night. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to catch the aurora borealis.
Go Fishing: Even if you’re not an expert angler, we highly recommend giving fly fishing a try in the Gallatin River. The river features a variety of species, including huge rainbow trout, and there are plenty of local guides to help you find the best spot.
