Joshua Tree National Park is filled with stunning views. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for beautiful natural sights, this park has it all. Here are some of the best views you can’t miss:
1. Ryan Mountain
Ryan Mountain is one of the park’s highlights. It offers incredible panoramic views of the landscape. This popular trail is around 4.7 kilometers long and takes about 1 hour and 57 minutes to complete. The hike leads to an unforgettable summit, especially at sunset. Be prepared for some uphill walking, so bring enough water, snacks, and sun protection. Summers can get very hot, so be cautious.
2. Barker Dam
The Barker Dam hike is great for families. It’s relatively easy, mostly flat, with some rocky and sandy parts. This trail leads to the historic Barker Dam, known for its rock art, and provides glimpses of iconic boulders. There’s a bit of rock climbing if you’re up for it, so wear good shoes. Along the way, you’ll see Joshua trees, creosote bushes, and piñon pines. Keep an eye out for rock climbers on the impressive granite formations.
3. Hidden Valley
Hidden Valley is an excellent choice for a short hike, offering the best of Joshua Tree. This 1.6-kilometer loop is right off Park Boulevard. The park’s golden rock formations encircle the valley, creating a lovely and safe environment. Legend has it that 19th-century cattle rustlers used this area to hide their stolen cattle.
4. Fortynine Palms Oasis Trail
This 5.0-kilometer hike takes you through diverse terrain, including rocky ridges, sandy washes, and stunning views. You’ll hike down into a canyon to discover a remote fan palm oasis. There are some steep sections as you go over ridges and into canyons, with barrel cacti scattered around. The trailhead is accessible via a small dirt road off Twenty-Nine Palms Highway.
5. Arch Rock Trail
The Arch Rock Trail is a short but sweet adventure through sandy and rocky terrain. It leads to the famous granite Arch Rock formation. The trail is just over half a mile long and takes you to a loop around the iconic arch.
