About the Tour
Embark on a scenic drive through South Dakota’s Black Hills to the iconic Mount Rushmore, discovering the region’s rich mix of history and natural beauty. We begin our adventure at the Minuteman Missile Visitor Center, delving into the Cold War era with a visit to decommissioned missile silos and control centers, highlighting the intense history of nuclear readiness.
Next, we explore the Badlands, starting with the famous Door Trail. This boardwalk leads us through a rock notch to stunning formations and optional trails like the Notch Trail, offering a more adventurous climb. At Fossil Trail, we uncover stories of ancient life perfectly preserved in the park’s geological layers.
Driving along, we encounter the Badlands Wall, separating the Upper and Lower Prairie. Here, the eroding buttes offer spectacular views and trails for deeper exploration. Yellow Mounds Overlook provides a panoramic vista of the park’s striking color variations, a photographer’s delight.
In Rapid City, we wander among life-sized presidential statues and visit the Journey Museum, which chronicles the period from the dinosaur era to the Wild West. Keystone, near Mount Rushmore, features attractions like the Borglum Story Museum and activities like the Rushmore Tramway, enhancing our historical experience.
The highlight is Mount Rushmore, approached via the scenic Iron Mountain Road, featuring tunnels and pigtail bridges. Consider an evening visit for the lighting ceremony, which dramatically illuminates the presidential sculptures.
Our journey continues through Custer State Park via the Wildlife Loop Road, home to a large bison herd and diverse wildlife. The nearby Needles Highway leads to Sylvan Lake, the serene ‘Jewel of Custer State Park,’ and the starting point for the Black Elk Peak trail.
The Crazy Horse Memorial offers a deep dive into Native American heritage, while historic Deadwood brings the Wild West back to life with its preserved saloons and museums. Our route includes Spearfish Canyon, known for its limestone cliffs and waterfalls, and a detour to Wyoming’s Devil’s Tower, a sacred and mesmerizing rock formation.
